New York Assembly bill A7006B, the Right to Repair Act, would give citizens and repair shops the right to repair consumer electronics. Even though it has been sitting on the governor’s desk for a couple of months, she has neither signed nor vetoed it. I suspect the fact that she is up for re-election could possibly have something to do with it.
Manufacturers, of course, say there are safety and cybersecurity issues associated letting people fix their broken stuff. I think, mostly, it is about losing revenue from repairs and also from people not buying new stuff.
The bill requires manufacturers to provide manuals and parts, tools and software diagnostics to consumers and repair shops.
The federal trade commission is supporting the bill.
We shall see what happens after tomorrow.
